As a voluntary aided primary school of 200+ pupils we have a governing body of 16. 
  Types of Governors

·        Foundation Appointed by the PCC of St. John’s Church Clifton or the Diocese of Wakefield. There must be a majority of 2 foundation governors over all other governors on the full body. Their role is to preserve and develop the religious character of the school.

·        Parent. Elected by parents of children attending the school at the time of election.

·        Teacher. Elected by, and from among, the teachers at the school.

·        Non-teaching staff. Elected by, and from among, the people employed by the school excluding teachers.

·        LEA Appointed by Calderdale education authority to represent the main political parties.

·        Vicar The incumbent of the parish of St John’s Clifton.

·        Headteacher Self explanatory.

Specialist Governors

We have 10 governors with a particular specialist role.


·        Child Protection: named governor to deal with any matters reported under this heading.      

·        Health & Safety: carries out an annual risk assessment of the school premises and activities, using this information to formulate and implement the school’s health and safety policy.

·         ICT:                   

·        Literacy: 
                                 
·        Numeracy:  
                  
·        Citizenship: Each of these four governors are responsible for ensuring that the school is meeting the required standard in each subject as detailed in the National Curriculum.

·       SEN: reports to the governing body about the arrangements for those pupils designated to receive extra assistance because of their special educational needs.

·        Performance management (3): These governors are responsible for the system of appraisal of the head teacher and other school teachers. 
 
                     

The Governing Body/Headteacher Partnership

"The governing body has a very good involvement in monitoring, evaluating and setting the direction for the school." (Ofsted 2005)

Within the school there is educational partnership between the Governors and the Headteacher and staff.

The Headteacher and staff are responsible for:-

the provision and delivery of the National Curriculum in the context of a full range of learning experiences;

the achievement of the highest standards possible for each particular child;

the self-evaluation and continuous monitoring, internal to the school and tailored to its needs, which is vital to professional and institutional development;

the effective deployment of resources;

the regular review of the effectiveness of monitoring and support activities.

“The quality of leadership and management, including the senior management team is having a major impact on standards and on the excellent school ethos.” (Ofsted 1999)

 

The Governors are responsible for:-

monitoring the effective delivery of the National Curriculum;

financial management;

professional advice on the adequacy and deployment of resources within the school;

monitoring the school’s self-evaluation;

establishing clear priorities and procedures for the effective support of the school;

the regular review, with the school, of the effectiveness of monitoring and support activities.
